Adrspach

Fauna

Fossils preserved in mighty layers of sandstone and argillite prove ancient life in the Mesozoic sea. They are mostly shells and fossils of ammonites and other molluscs. Owing to suitable and varied natural conditions, the today's fauna is rich in species as well. There are 163 species of vertebrates within the national park and close vicinity (34 species of mammals, 121 species of birds and 8 species of amphibians and reptiles).

Mammals

The mammals found in the area: Red deer, wild boar, fox, pine marten and badger. A distinctive species found in this area is alpine shrew (Sorex alpinus).

Birds

In the Broumovsko Protected Lanscape, four pairs of black stork nest every year, one of them in the Adrspach and Teplice Rock Area. Also other bird species such as wall creeper (Tichodroma muraria) and even kingfisher (Alcedo athis), have already been seen here. The inaccessible cliffs and rock walls are home to birds of prey such as eagle owl (Bubo bubo), screech owl, hawk, sparrowhawk, bee-eater, kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), burnet and others. Peregrine falcon once a typical bird of prey in this region was last seen here in 1968. Since 1995 however, ornithologists have been releasing young falcons every year. Of course, when walking about the park, you can watch a lot of smaller birds such as tits, nuthatches, finches, warblers, robins and others besides woodpeckers, woodcocks and song thrushes which are quite common here.

Insects

Beetles (Coleoptera)

One of the most extensive orders of insects is represented in the Adršpach and teplice Rock area by more than eight hundred species. Most of which are known relatively little, especially tiny and difficult-to-classify species. In deep gorges, entomologists can find cold-loving species like Pterostichus rhaeticus, click beetle (Sericus subaeneus) and Chrysomela lapponica.
In pine-tree growths, a rare species of capricorn beetle (Pedostrangalia pubescens) is found. Another unique finding in this area is the only European representative of the Sphaeridae family – Sphaerites glabratus . Another rare species from the rove beetle family found here is small Encephalus complicans which, if endangered, can roll up into a ball. Buprestids (Buprestidae) are represented by a few small species such as Anthaxia nitidula, Anthaxia quadripunctata and by the only bigger species – Bubrestis rustica. As for the Histeridae family, the only interesting species found in this area is Hetaerius ferrugineus - a small (1.4 mm long) myrmecophilic (i.e. living with ants) beetle.

Spiders (Araneae)

Web pages with pictures and classification of spiders created by Mr. Macek and photographed mostly in Adrspach can be found at http://www.pavouci-cz.eu/

Butterflies (Lepidoptera)

A rare species found at the edge of the rock area (at the village of Bučnice) is Polymixis xanthomista – an owlet moth living on stony slopes. Another rare owlet moth living in butterbur growths and found in this area is Hydroecia petasitis.
