Adrspach

The School in Dolni Adrspach

Until 1869, Adrspach’s one-class primary school was located in house No. 69 . As the number of pupils was increasing from year to year, the municipality had a new school building built in 1877. In 1894, the two-class primary school had three teachers and 108 pupils (62 girls and 46 boys). In 1930, two teachers taught 72 pupils. An important role in the teaching at the school was played by senior teacher Antonin Tolg, a chronicler and local historian. In 1921, after a lot of protests by local people and people from the immediate vicinity, an attempt to establish a Czech school failed. Only on the 24th of May, 1936, teaching in a Czech class in the local German school building was commenced. The class consisted of nine children (three from Dolni Adrspach, three from Libna and three from Horni Adrspach).

From April 24, 1936 to July 16, 1936, the school was administered by temporary teacher Bohuslav Tosovsky. On July 16, 1936, Rudolf Novak was appointed new headmaster. The opening ceremony was held on September 20, 1936 in the presence of about 900 people who had come from far and near. At 2 p.m. there was a procession from the train station to the school accompanied with a brass band from the village of Machov. Then the celebration was opened by Mr. J. Barnet who made a formal speech. The celebrations continued in the hotel near the train station with music and singing performances. On December 10, 1936, the first Czech St. Nicholas Eve party was held here. The next day, the school children were given small presents sponsored by Baroness Nadherny, by the companies of Bata and Barton and by some other Czech citizens. On December 1, 1937, the post as a national history and geography teacher was taken up by Ms. O. Kocarova who also taught at primary schools in Chvalec and Teplice nad Metuji.

Until liberation in 1945, the school had not been used for teaching for many months. At that time, the school served as a place for refugees’ overnight stays. After liberation, its ground floor was used as a barrack unit for part of the Adrspach garrison until the beginning of August when it moved to Horni Adrspach.

The school year of 1945/1946 was commenced with 12 children in a one-class school on September 3, 1945. Agricultural subjects were taught by chief forester Vaclav Lochman, girls’ subjects were taught by Libuse Komarkova from Teplice nad Metuji.

From the first of January, 1954 onwards, the post of teacher at this school was taken up by Vera Martinkova but she started her maternity leave the year after, on the fifteenth of March, 1955. The teaching in that school year was completed by Vilem Selichar who commuted to Adrspach from the town of Police nad Metuji.

A newly-appointed headmistress and teacher in the school year of 1955/1956 was Helena Matejkova who had been transferred here from the Hradec Kralove District at her own request. In the school year of 1957/1958 it was Zdenka Hlavsova who had come from the Bilina District was appointed headmistress of the one-class primary school in Dolni Adrspach.
